Pediatric Wheelchairs
Pediatric wheelchairs offer many of the same features and benefits of adult chairs and come in the same overall styles with the exception of bariatric. The one difference found in pediatric wheelchiars is they are usually designed to grow larger with the child. This growth usually requires ordering parts but some models are designed to grow in width and/or depth without the need for new parts.
Frame - Almost evey pediatric wheelchair is made of aluminum to keep the weight as light possible to minimise the effort required for propulsion by children. As mentioned before, Kids wheelchairs are available in most of the basic styles (lightweight, lightweight adjustable, recline, rigid & tilt).
Upholstery - Most pediatric wheelchairs offer a good selection of upholstery with colour and material options.
Armrests - The armrests on a pediatric wheelchairs are the same as adult models with the same limitations dictated by the style of chair purchased.
Footrests - As with the armrests, legrest options are the same as adult wheelchairs and limited by style but kids wheelchairs have an option of 90 degree footrests which position the feet directly below the knees. This not an option on adult chairs as 90 degree footrests for an adult would be so long they would impede the fronts caster's rotating.
Wheels & Casters - The options for wheel size and type are quite good on this style of chair. The rear wheels most commonly ordered in 22" and 24" but 20" and 26" are often available. The front casters are available in 6" or 8" diameters. Both rear wheels and caster are available with air or solid tires however casters almost always work better when they are solid.
