Standard Wheelchairs
Standard wheelchairs are basically unchanged from the mid 1960s when they were the only style available for all types of users. They are most suitable for occasional short term use such as loaner or rentals and are not usually purchased by users for normal use.
Frame - When you purchase a standard manual wheelchair you are going to get a steel folding frame wheelchair which will probably weigh between 40 and 60 pounds. They usually come in three seat widths (16", 18" & 20"), one seat depth (16") and one seat height (19" to 21").
Upholstery - The upholstery will probably be vinyl and although there may be some choice of colour most dealers will usually only stock one or two colours which means your wheelchair will have to be ordered if they don't have your colour.
Armrests - Armrests on standard wheelchairs can be full or desk length and removable or fixed in place. Adjustable height arms are not usually available on this style of wheelchair.
Footrests - Standard wheelchair are sold with footrests included but they are very basic swingaway footrests although on some models the footrests are part of the frame and not removable. For an up charge you can usually purchase elevating legrests if needed but these will add substantially the the weight and length of the wheelchair.
Wheels & Casters - The odds are you won't get any choice on wheels or casters with a standard wheelchair. They're usually fitted with 24" solid rear wheels and 8" solid casters but some companies will offer air tires instead of solid. The rims were spoked for many years but today they are usually sold with a composite plastic wheel rim which is cheaper, lighter and require less maintenance.
